Preparing for Surgery
Before Surgery
It is extremely important that you follow all preoperative instructions. Failure to follow any of these instructions may result in cancellation of your surgery. If you have questions, please contact your physician or a member of our staff. The following instructions will help you best prepare for your upcoming procedure:
- Plan to arrive one hour before your scheduled surgery time unless otherwise directed by your physician
- Notify your physician if there is a change in your physical condition, such as a cold, fever or respiratory problems
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your procedure. This includes drinking water, eating mints and chewing gum
- Talk with your physician about all current prescribed and over-the-counter medications, especially if you take aspirin or other blood thinners. Your physician may ask you to discontinue certain medications prior to your surgery date
- Take a bath or shower the morning of the procedure
- Complete all required blood work prior and pretesting, such as x-rays and EKGs, prior to the scheduled date of your procedure
- Make arrangements with a friend or family member to stay with you during your procedure, drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours after surgery. Your surgery will be canceled and rescheduled if you fail to bring a responsible adult
Day of Surgery
You may have a lot on your mind the day of your procedure. Following these guidelines will ensure your surgical procedure is as stress-free as possible:
- Bring a list of your current medications, your insurance card, your driver’s license and any co-pay or co-insurance with you on the day of your procedure
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes
- Do not wear jewelry, including body piercings and leave valuables at home
- Do not wear make-up, perfume or cologne, lotion, fingernail or toenail polish, or contact lenses on the day of the procedure
- If your child is having surgery, feel free to bring a favorite stuffed toy or security blanket
- No more than two adult visitors per patient are allowed
- A responsible adult must remain in the surgery center throughout your stay
- A parent/guardian must remain in the surgery center throughout the minor child’s stay
After Surgery
Following surgery and an appropriate recovery time, your surgeon with consult with your family and a nurse will prepare you to go home. Follow these instructions for a successful recovery:
- Adhere to the written postoperative instructions regarding diet, activities, and medications given to your responsible adult
- Call your surgeon or go to the nearest hospital emergency room if you experience any problems
- Plan to rest because you may experience drowsiness or dizziness for up to 24 hours
- Wait 24 hours after surgery to drive or operate any equipment, sign important papers, make important decisions or drink alcoholic beverages
Billing Information
We appreciate your selecting Southern Indiana Surgery Center (SISC). SISC will complete all medical insurance claims for services provided. Advance Directive
In an emergency, SISC will transfer you to the closest hospital, which will make the decisions to follow any advance directive or living will you may have.
